POWER DUNK VIDEO: BIG GUY SHOWS LOTS OF WAYS TO SLAM!
Almost all observers are wildly impressed when shorter athletes demonstrate big time hops. But the fact is, taller athletes can be great jumpers as well. Lebron James comes immediately to mind for instance. It may not seem like much to most folks that a big man can reach up really high off a good jump but it is important to keep in mind that big guys are often lifting a much heavier load up off the ground.
Another tall leaper out of the past is Wilt Chamberlain. At his peak he could in fact jump up and touch the top of a basketball back board. His ability to jump was truly breath taking. There are not a whole lot of those kinds of very tall leapers around so if there is ever a chance to watch one in action, take the time to do so. Some of the most storied match ups in hoops history are when one tall jumper played against another tall leaper. Those are games which are literally played on a whole other level. For mere mortals, it is a battle to behold.
Which brings up the video that follows. This is of a young, six foot eight athlete demonstrating an impressive variety of dunks. What is worth watching here is not his rather significant hops but the power that gets him up in the air and keeps him there long enough to do what he does with the ball. Further, he does so inside and outside, daytime and after dark, off the wall, off the back board, left and right handed and so on.
Notably there is a partial training message at the end. Although a big time vert requires a great deal more training than advocated here, the message is a good one. If you want better hops, get to work. If you want a huge increase in jump reach, get into a fully comprehensive jump training program that addresses all aspects of vertical jump development.
